Overview & Architectural Motivation
Apache Ossie (incubating), formerly known as the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI), is an open source project and vendor-neutral specification designed to standardize how business metrics, dimensions, and semantic relationships are expressed across analytical platforms.
Historically, organizations defined metrics inside proprietary BI tools or isolated data transformation scripts. A metric like Net Revenue or Churn Rate would be coded in PowerBI DAX, recoded in Tableau calculated fields, rewritten in SQL models, and re-prompted in conversational AI agents.
This semantic fragmentation produced conflicting numbers across executive meetings and generated serious hallucinations in enterprise AI agents. Apache Ossie addresses this challenge by establishing an open, machine-readable standard (defined in YAML and JSON) that allows organizations to define semantic models once and translate them consistently to any BI dashboard, SQL engine, or AI agent.
Architecture & System Flow
Internal Mechanics & Specifications
Apache Ossie organizes data semantics into declarative, interoperable specifications:
Declarative Metric Models
Ossie files specify datasets, primary entities, measures, and dimensions declaratively:
- Measures: Numerical aggregations with explicit computation types (sum, count_distinct, percentile).
- Dimensions: Categorical or temporal attributes used for slicing and grouping.
- Relationships: Explicit join paths between entities (one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many) with referential integrity rules.
- Derived Metrics: Calculated business metrics combining base measures with mathematical operations and temporal offsets (e.g. Year-over-Year Growth).
Engine Translation
Ossie is engine-agnostic. A translation runtime parses Ossie definitions and emits native SQL queries tailored to the target query engine (such as Dremio, Snowflake, or Trino). Join paths are resolved automatically, preventing fanout errors and chasm traps.
Grounding Metadata for AI
For Large Language Models and autonomous AI systems, Ossie exposes formal semantic context. Rather than forcing an LLM to guess table schemas and formulate complex multi-table SQL joins, the agent requests the Ossie metric definition and asks the semantic engine for the exact metric sliced by relevant dimensions.
Role in the Open Lakehouse and AI Architecture
Apache Ossie provides the business logic layer in an Open Lakehouse and AI architecture.
While Apache Parquet and Apache Iceberg govern physical data files and tables, and Apache Polaris governs catalog access, Ossie standardizes the meaning of the data. It ensures that an autonomous AI agent generating an analytical summary reports the exact same metric figures as a finance department dashboard.
In multi-agent architectures (using MCP and A2A protocols), AI agents invoke semantic tools that interpret Ossie definitions. This ensures complete consistency across automated decision pipelines without manual SQL auditing.
OPEN STANDARDS GUARANTEE
Open data architecture separates data storage, metadata catalogs, and query execution into independent open standards. Organizations retain complete ownership of their data assets without vendor lock-in.
Ecosystem Interoperability & Open Interfaces
Apache Ossie bridges across the open enterprise ecosystem:
- Resolves table and column references against Apache Iceberg tables in an open catalog.
- Generates optimized SQL pushed down to Dremio, Trino, Spark, and cloud data warehouses.
- Integrates with Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to expose semantic metric tools to LLMs.
- Backed by a wide coalition of open data organizations including Snowflake, dbt Labs, and Dremio.
Production Engineering Considerations
Best practices for implementing Apache Ossie semantic models:
Version Control via Git
Store all Ossie YAML specifications in Git repositories. Treat changes to business metric definitions with the same rigorous code review and CI/CD validation as production software code.
Avoid Raw Column Leaks
Do not expose unvalidated physical columns directly to consumers or AI agents. Route all queries through certified Ossie measures and dimensions to guarantee consistent calculations.
Granular Dimension Definitions
Clearly define time zones, fiscal calendars, and currency conversion parameters inside Ossie models to prevent subtle discrepancies across regional reporting teams.
